Theresa May has said she wants to hold a snap general election on 8 June, despite repeatedly claiming that she was against the idea of an early vote.

In a surprise statement outside Downing Street this morning, the prime minister claimed that opposition parties were jeopardising her government’s preparations for Brexit.

“We need a general election and we need one now,” she said. “I have only recently and reluctantly come to this conclusion but now I have concluded it is the only way to guarantee certainty for the years ahead.”

Labour Leave is ready for this moment, we have been planning.

We know the anti-Brexit alliance will move heaven and earth to get as many anti-Brexit MPs into office as possible. We know article 50 can likely be reserved, therefore this election just become the most important election this country has ever seen.

Labour Leave will defend marginal Brexit seats, we will work with all our Labour MPs who are going to have the fight of their lives to survive.

If we lose Labour Leave MPs then we could lose Brexit.

We learnt recently that Mr Blair’s campaign has £9,000,000 dedicated to STOPPING BREXIT. He can continue to raise an infinite amount of money from the City of London and from rich Remainers such as Richard Branson and JK Rowling. We know he is now active in this campaign, this was music to his ears.

Phil, we knew the battle was not over, we understood that out of touch politicians, with their out of touch policies would try to Take Back Control from the British people. This is why we had to keep fighting.

The anti-Brexit alliance campaign to STOP BREXIT is an insult to the very idea that ordinary people have a role to play in our political process.

Will you make a donation right now to show that OUR power – to follow through on our democratic decision – is STRONGER THAN ANYTHING THE ANTI-BREXIT ALLIANCE CAN DO OR SAY?

Giving any amount – small or large – sends a message that some are still refusing to hear: we’ve got power in numbers, and we will not go down without a fight.

Yours sincerely,

Brendan Chilton,

General Secretary Labour Leave
